Iznit, the ancient town of Nicea is approximately 130 kms away from Istanbul. Originally an important Roman and Byzantine town, it fell to the Seljuks in 1078 and subsequently to the Ottomans in 1331. The importance of Nicea in Christian history is in the two ecumenical councils held here. Another thing that makes Iznik famous are world famous Iznik tiles. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Iznik was the center of the production of the exquisite ceramic wares, which have made such an important decorative contribution to mosques and palaces throughout Turkey.
